Vintage Sextet

After playing with (accompanying) many musicians it was Han Kleene (fan/jazzlover) who helped Ben Schröder to start the vintage sextet.

Groovy jazz from the 50s/60s as we know it from Lee Morgan, Horace Silver and Miles Davis. Well-known beautiful pieces from that time are Mercy, mercy, mercy, Jive Samba, Sack O’Woe, Milestones etc.
Here the emphasis lies on the polyphonic interplay of the 3 wind instruments in particular and the solo power of all band members. Pianist Udo van Boven has arranged the pieces.

Paul practically grew up playing with his brothers (Mark, Matthijs and Clemens) with whom he formed the all-brothers Feenbrothers quartet, which initially featured the eleven year old Paul on clarinet.
At age 14 he picked up the alto sax and -still a youngster- graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory in 2002. After spending some time in New York Paul explored several musical genres in depth like Funk, R&B and especially Classical Music, but was drawn back into Jazz by rediscovering John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter and eventually began to discard all forms of musical parochialism.

Tenor Saxophone

Floriaan Wempe

With a unique sound and signature Floriaan Wempe (1989) is known as an adventurous, swinging and elegant saxophonist.
In his quest for touching melodies and the magic of the moment he captivates listeners with a story that flows from the tradition but that is unmistakably his own.
That he was taken under the wing by the late, great Roy Hargrove speaks to his potential and musical affections. He grew up hearing bebop and hardbop and soaked up the entire jazz history during his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and trips to New York City.

Piano/arranger

Udo van Boven

The Hague pianist/arranger Udo van Boven has been playing on stages and festivals throughout Western Europe for about 40 years.
Together with drummer Ben Schröder and bassist Alex Milo, he has played frequently in and around The Hague since the 1990s and wrote all arrangements for the Vintage Sextet.
